U's boss John McGreal has made his first new signing of the summer, bringing in Ryan Jackson from Gillingham.
And the U’s boss was pleased with his first foray into the transfer market.
He told cu-fc.com: “I’m delighted to have got Ryan into the club and signing a contract with us.”
“He’s someone we have had our eye on for a while and he’s just the sort of dedicated and hungry player we want in amongst the squad.
“Over the course of the past two seasons, he has been a regular player in League One and I know that he has ambitions of playing even higher in the future."
As has been reported already, Jackson will take the number two shirt as a squad number, vacated by Richard Brindley.
Brindley was offered a new contract at the end of the season, but turned it down hoping for a move elsewhere.
McGreal admitted to being in football long enough to not let the grass grow under his feet, saying: “I said at the end of the season that contracts had been offered but if they weren’t agreed, we had irons in the fire.”
“Ryan was always one of those irons and as I said before, I’m delighted that we have got a player of his quality on board.”
