Quarter Finals of Premier League Cup awaits.
Colchester United's U23s remarkable run in the Premier League Cup continued on Friday night, as they progressed through to the Quarter Finals of this year's competition with a 1-0 win over Sunderland.
Eoin McKeown's early goal was enough to secure the win, as the U's stood strong to withstand the pressure they were put under in the second half.
The victory means that the U's have defeated all three Premier League teams that they've faced in this year's competition (Manchester City, Hull City and Sunderland), as well as progressing past Category One side Derby County in the group stages.
They saw victory despite missing a number of regular players who were with John McGreal's first team for the match at Crewe at the weekend.
McKeown's goal came after he had already been denied in the early stages. He rounded the keeper, only to see his shot cleared off the line as the U's started brightly.
But he got his rewards on nine minutes, as he stabbed the ball home through a host of bodies to put Colchester in front.
The U's went on to enjoy a positive first half, and nearly doubled their advantage when Dunne got on the end of an Ocran cross midway through the first period.
Embleton did his best to draw the Black Cats level, his set piece hitting the bar with Dean Brill beaten.
The U's went in ahead at half time, though, but had plenty more to do in the second half as the Premier League side stepped up their efforts.
The U's had to show real defensive discipline as Sunderland penned them in.
Asoro nearly equalised with a header and Robson had a shot blocked as Brill's goal came under fire.
Hume beat three players before forcing a save out of the U's goalie, but there was plenty to come in the final moments of the match.
Brill saved a penalty deep into injury time from Maja, before the striker headed home just after - only to be denied by the offside flag.
A monumental effort from the U's, who now await their next opponents.
U's: Brill, Kensdale, Ocran, Harrison, Peter, Wright, Brown, Howard (Clampin, 90), McKeown (Keys, 70), Issa, Dunne (Jones, 78)
