Szmodics Seals U's Win

Late winner at Barnet from sub Sammie

11 November 2017

The U's have beaten Barnet 1-0 at The Hive, thanks to a late winner from Sammie Szmodics.

The U's sub had already created chances for himself before unleashing a rocket of a left foot shot that flew into the inside netting of the Barnet goal.

Over 600 travelling fans enjoyed that moment, and the final whistle that went less than ten minutes later.

A forgettable first half saw Sam Walker make a couple of regulation saves and was heading for a goalless draw before Szmodics was introduced.

It made it five away games unbeaten in League Two for the U's, who return to north Essex next weekend with the visit of Morecambe.

The game started with the U’s finding some space on the right in the first minute through Tom Eastman and Ryan Jackson.

The latter found Drey Wright, who flicked the ball inside to Brandon Hanlan and the loanee was only denied by a last ditch block.

On four minutes, the hosts got their first opportunity, following Jackson’s cheap foul on the edge of the box.

The free kick was whipped in low, but Sam Walker was equal to it and held on as Barnet players sniffed around for any slip up.

Walker had to make a second smart save when Jack Taylor hit a twenty yard shot low to the U’s keeper’s right.

With Barnet having the slight edge on possession and territory, it was they who had the next effort, coming in the fourteenth minute.

A short period of head-tennis between the two sides ended with the ball dropping to Simeon Akinola, who couldn’t keep his volley down and it flew well clear of the U’s crossbar.

Jackson, who was seeing a fair bit of the ball on the U’s right, decided to cut in onto his left foot but hit the shot wide of target from the angle of the box.

That effort came in the seventeenth minute, and there was to be a long gap until the next shot at goal at either end.

Only two minutes before the break, Kane Vincent-Young got forward on the left, but hit his long range effort well wide.

It was no surprise that the score was 0-0 at the break, with neither side really testing their opposing keeper too many problems.

There wasn’t any danger for either keeper in the early stages of the second period either, and it wasn’t until the fifty second minute that a ball found its way into either box.

Akinola got into the left hand channel but his mishit shot found Coulthirst, who unsuccessfully tried a pullback when he might have got an angled shot away.

He then shot well over the crossbar from further out and from then on, the U’s grew into the game and put more pressure on the hosts.

Just before the hour mark, a corner found Hanlan on the far post and his head back into the danger area was perfect for the onrushing Ryan Inniss.

The U’s centre half powered in a header and it looked certain to be a penalty as a Barnet arm blocked it on the line – no whistle came and the scores remained goalless.

With around twenty minutes to go, John McGreal brought Sammie Szmodics on as a sub for Hanlan, and that proved to be the pivotal moment.

Within a minute, Szmodics had a shot saved by Stevens, when he turned sharply and shot through a defender’s legs.

On eighty three minutes, Stevens stood no chance as Szmodics’ shot arrowed into the corner to make it 1-0.

The youngster, who has been troubled by a series of injuries over the past two years, used Jackson’s overlap as a decoy and cut inside before rifling home in front of over 600 U’s supporters.

He and his teammates then comfortably saw out the remaining minutes, and the U’s made it five away games unbeaten in League Two as they moved up to tenth place.
