Sammie Injury Update

Positive early signs for Szmodics

27 September 2017

Sammie Szmodics suffered injury on Tuesday night at Grimsby, but early indications suggest that it isn't going to keep him out for as long as previous setbacks.

The U's youngster won possession of the ball in the centre circle, but was fouled by Mariners midfielder Luke Summerfield before he could get an attack going.

He had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, having replaced Brandon Hanlan with a quarter of the game to go.

Despite Sammie being stretchered off in a lot of pain, U's Physio Tony Flynn and the Grimsby Doctor didn't think a hospital visit was necessary and he left Blundell Park on crutches and in an Airboot.

Flynn had better news than most expected on Wednesday lunchtime, saying: "The boot and crutches were precautionary to a degree, but meant we were able to keep the injury immobilised and without weight on it."

"When Sammie first went down, it looked nasty and it was certainly very near to the site of the previous injury."

"Having took a good look at it though, the indications point to some damage to the ankle ligaments but it's hard to make a proper call on it until the swelling goes down."

"Once that happens, we can get a better idea of what damage there is in there."
