County Run Out Winners

U's unable to build on early goal

14 April 2018

Colchester United fell to defeat on Saturday afternoon as Notts County came from behind to take all three points.

Things were looking good for the U's at the break as they led 1-0, but Notts County came strong in the second half to secure all three points.

The U's will look back to a great save by Adam Collin in the first half and the hitting the post from Tom Eastman at the start of the second as pivotal moments, with the Magpies then taking control of the game in the final half an hour.

John McGreal's men started on the front foot and found themselves a goal ahead with a sparkling move.

Ben Stevenson and Drey Wright exchanged a one-two on the edge of the box and the U's number seven kept his calm to divert the ball past Adam Collin and put the U's in front.

It continued to be the U's that were the more progressive, pushing County back and testing Collin with a series of shots with Vincent-Young and Mandron both going close.

The U's nearly went two ahead just after the half hour mark, as Mandron diverted Stevenson's shot towards goal, but Collin reacted smartly to save the ball.

Just before the half time, there was anger in the U's crowd as Prosser went down off the ball after a coming together with Ameobi, but the referee didn't see the incident and play continued.

One up at the break, the U's went close to doubling their advantage after the interval.

A cross was swung into the box and both Mandron and Eastman headed it towards goal, only for it to come back off the inside of the upright.

That missed chance was to prove costly, as County drew level on 51 minutes. The ball found its way to Forte on the far post and he drilled home past Walker.

The U's responded well to going behind, with Stevenson winning the ball back high up the pitch and Wright's resulting low cross just missing the dives of Szmodics and Shodipo.

However, County went ahead on 69 minutes, as the U's blocked the ball well twice in their area, only for Ameobi to pounce and drill home.

The U's introduced Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe and Courtney Senior as they looked to get back into the game, but five minutes after their introduction, County went further ahead.

Centre half Duffy was on hand to head home past Walker and take the game further away from the U's.

The U's now faced a side happy to sit back, and prompted and probed but couldn't break the Magpies down.

And the visitors were able to hold the U's at bay and strengthen their play-off hopes.
