U23s Win Again

Will Wright grabs decisive goal

12 April 2018

Colchester United's U23s made it two wins in a week on Thursday afternoon, as they ran out 1-0 winners against Cardiff City.

A goal from Will Wright was enough to separate the two sides and ensure the U's moved onto the heels of the teams above them in the league table.

The U's could have gone ahead after just three minutes, when Ryan Gondoh forced a great save out of the Cardiff keeper.

And they went close again when Decarrey Sheriff's effort was blocked by good defending,

But City could do little to deny Will Wright, who smashed home from close range after ten minutes.

It could have got even better for the U's when Gondoh's effort from distance smacked back off the woodwork.

Things settled down after that early flurry and Cardiff had a chance from Harris, who forced a save out of Dom Kurasik.

Waite struck an effort just over the bar just before half time, but the U's went into the break ahead.

The U's came out strongly after the interval and Ollie Sims had an effort turned behind for a corner on 55 minutes.

Wright went close again just after the hour mark with a header just over the bar, before Kurasik made an excellent stop at the other end to preserve the advantage.

Tariq Issa pulled a shot wide on 76 minutes, but Wright's early goal was enough to give the U's all three points.

U's: Kurasik, W. Wright (Rooney 80), Kazeem, Warde, Kensdale, James, Gondoh, Anderson, Sheriff (Cornish 52), Issa, Sims

Subs not used: Hallett, Allarakhia
