Coventry Defeat U's U23s

Phipps goal overturned by Sky Blues in second half

19 February 2018

Colchester United U23s fell to defeat in their latest away day at Coventry City.

They had taken the lead early in the match but City, featuring former U's loanee Kyel Reid, turned things around in the second half to earn all three points.

The match saw recent arrival Olamide Shodipo get some action under his belt as he pushes for a place in John McGreal's first team.

And his side went in front after just five minutes through Eli Phipps.

They nearly doubled their lead in a goalmouth scramble on 20 minutes but City showed their intent when they hit the bar on the half hour mark through Jordan Maguire-Drew.

Phipps nearly added a second on the stroke of half time, but the U's had to make do with a single goal lead at the break.

Maguire-Drew played his part as City drew level ten minutes into the second half, whipping in a corner for Chris Camwell tovolley home past Dom Kurasik.

City hit the bar for a second time on the hour mark, but took the lead on 65 minutes.

They broke from a U's corner and Maguire-Drew was the man on the end of the move to make it 2-1.

And, with fifteen minutes to go, City took the game further away from the U's, as Ponticelli lifted the ball over Kurasik to seal the win.
