Barnes on target in Torquay win

12 February 2018

Aaron Barnes grabbed his first goal in senior football on Saturday, as Torquay gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a big boost with a win over Maidenhead United.

Barnes struck in a long distance shot that beat former U's keeper Carl Pentney and helped the Gulls to a 2-1 win at York Road to close the gap on the teams above them.

Meanwhile, fellow defender Cameron James played ninety minutes to help Chelmsford to a remarkable win in their game against Dartford, with the Clarets scoring twice late in the game to turn the match around and strengthen their promotion hopes.

There was a dramatic afternoon for Dillon Barnes, who stepped off the bench after just fifteen minutes for Hemel Hempstead when fellow keeper Laurie Walker was sent off for handling outside of the area.

Opponents Oxford City took full advantage of the extra man, running out 4-1 winners.

Callum Sturgess saw his game with Needham Market postponed due to weather conditions, whilst Ryan Clampin played 81 minutes and George Brown nine, as Maldon gave up a two goal advantage to draw with Grays Athletic.

North of the border, there was a third consecutive defeat for St Johnstone, as they lost to Hearts in the Scottish Cup. Denny Johnstone played 64 minutes as the Edinburgh side defeated his loan team for the second time this year.

Craig Slater's Dundee United also fell out of the cup competition, losing 4-2 to Aberdeen, with the U's midfielder getting 45 minutes under his belt.
