Hard Work Must Continue

McGreal warns against complacency after award nominations

10 January 2018

John McGreal and Sammie Szmodics have been nominated for monthly awards, but the former wants more success in the second half of the season.

The U's had an unbeaten end to 2017, and both McGreal and Szmodics were named in the shortlists for the respective Manager and Player of the Month awards.

McGreal doesn't want anyone to rest on their laurels, but is proud that the club is getting headlines for their performances.

On hearing the news, he told the official website: "It's fantastic that our results in December have led to us getting this recognition from the EFL and SkyBet."

"The players have got us into this position, and they will be the ones to take the credit if we go on and achieve our goals.

"They have been extremely receptive to everything we ask of them and they have taken that info from the training ground into games.

"It must continue though, we can't take our foot off the gas. We have to keep up the hard work and try and replicate December in the four months remaining this season."

Of the nominations themselves, he added: "It’s another fantastic accolade for one of our players to be amongst the nominations. Sammie follows the likes of Frankie Kent, Brennan Dickenson and Kurtis Guthrie in being nominated and he deserves it for the performances he put in during December."

"He is truly one of our own, having been with us since he was about eight or nine and coming all the way through the Academy.

"I’m really pleased for him, he has overcome the difficulties of the injuries over the past couple of years.

"People don’t know how much work he has put in behind the scenes in the gym, making himself stronger, and now he is reaping the rewards of that hard work.

When asked about his own nomination, he replied: "It’s great to be nominated on a personal level, but if the players weren’t performing, I wouldn’t be getting on the lists."

"This is the fourth nomination that they have helped me to get and I’m really proud of that achievement for us all.

"A lot of credit must go to Steve Ball as well. He, along with all the backroom staff, gets through a load of work preparing the lads for training and games, making sure they know exactly what they need to do and what they’re up against in each game."

The winners of the December awards will be announced on Friday morning, (January 12th).
