Sammie In Running For Award

9 January 2018

Colchester United's top scorer Sammie Szmodics has been nominated for the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month for December.

He joins Head Coach John McGreal in being nominated for December, after a positive month for both the team and Sammie in his own right.

It was a stellar month for the 22-year-old midfielder with five goals and an assist. It is his willingness to surge forward into the penalty area and take on defenders which is particularly impressive, most notably in his charging solo effort against Port Vale.

Sammie now has twelve goals for the season, with his performances grabbing the headlines in recent weeks.

Sammie is up against the following players for the December award:-

Callum Lang (Morecambe) - striker
Five goals in 263 minutes on the pitch in December for the 19-year-old Wigan loanee after two months out through injury. Smart finishes against Mansfield and Yeovil were bettered by the vision he showed to pick out the top corner against Notts County.

Matt Rhead (Lincoln City) - striker
A perfect month for the Lincoln cult hero who celebrated signing a new contract by scoring four goals and setting up another. As well as scoring, he uses his physical presence cleverly to trouble defenders and create space for teammates.

Alan Sheehan (Luton Town) – central defender
The starting point of the Luton attack, his cultured left foot conjured up two dead-ball assists and a rasping tight-angled drive in December. His day job is stopping opponents from scoring, a task he also accomplished with three clean sheets.

Sammie will discover if he has been successful on Friday ahead of our trip to Wycombe - against whom he scored at Adams Park last season.
