Young U's Bow Out

Arsenal make Youth Cup Semi-Final

6 March 2018

The U's Youth Team have been beaten 5-1 by Arsenal in the Quarter-Final of the FA Youth Cup.

The scoreline reflected the Gunners' ruthlessness in the second half, but the U's were the better side for an hour of the game.

The Gunners had the early chances, but once the young U's got a foothold, it was they who created the better openings.

Callum Jones had a couple of sighters, including a free kick that was superbly tipped wide, before having the best chance of the half.

Ollie Sims put an inviting ball across the six yard box, but Jones could only hit the upright with his side foot effort at the far post.

It stayed goalless until the forty first minute, when Emile Smith-Rowe smashed home from eight yards out after a sharp one-two on the edge of the box.

The U's responded immediately after half time, when Callum Jones sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot after Ollie Sims was fouled by Gunners centre half Zech Medley.

It only took the visitors four minutes to go ahead again, through Smith-Rowe's top quality free-kick, and he then turned provider on fifty four minutes.

His unselfish pass set up Bukayo Sake, who rounded Harry Seaden to give Arsenal a two goal cushion at 3-1.

Fol Balogun made it 4-1 with an angled finish on sixty-five minutes, before Xavier Amaechi completed the scoring with seventeen minutes remaining.
