U's Beaten In FA Youth Cup

Stevenage make progress

31 October 2018

Colchester United's hopes in the FA Youth Cup were ended at the first hurdle on Tuesday evening, as Stevenage ran out 3-2 winners.

After a closely fought first twenty minutes, the home side took the lead on 20 minutes, when Liam Smyth tucked home a penalty but it was a lead that only lasted a matter of minutes.

Noah Chilvers darted into the box and got on the end of a Callum Anderson cross to level things up.

Stevenage finished the half on the front foot, but the scores were all square going into the break.

The second half saw both teams searching for that crucial third goal of the game and it was Stevenage that found it.

Dylan O'Donnell struck from distance and gave the home side the lead and two quickly became three, as Smyth got his second of the game.

The U's thought they had one back through Ollie Sims shortly afterwards, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

They did pull one back with six minutes to go as Jake Hutchinson tucked home from close range, but it was not enough as the home side saw out the remaining time to progress to Round Two.
