Blues Run Out Winners In U23s Clash

22 February 2019

There was late disappointment for the U's U23s on Friday afternoon, as Birmingham took all three points in the final Premier League Cup group game.

The U's had matched up their Championship opponents, but fell foul of two late goals as City ran out 2-1 winners.

The visitors had the first chance of the game as Dean Ager's free kick was headed just wide by David Agboola.

Odin Bailey curled a free kick wide for the Blues, before Callum Jones sent a shot just past the post for the U's as the two teams traded chances.

City were finishing the half the stronger, but overall it was an evenly matched opening forty-five minutes.

Jones almost got in on goal early in the second half but was denied by a good recovery from the home defence.

Todd Miller was then denied by a last ditch tackle, before City had the ball in the back of the net through Geraldo Bajrami, only for the offside flag to rule it out.

City did get the win late on, thanks to two quick fire goals.

The first came from a Bajrami header, before the second came the penalty spot through Bailey.

The U's got one back in injury time thanks to an own goal from Miller's cross, but they were unable to level things up before the final whistle.
