Colchester United held a school’s football tournament for girls in Years 7 and 8 to represent the club in the EFL Girls Cup regional finals and Thurstable School came out on top for the second year in a row.
The school then went on to win the area final hosted by Cambridge United at Haverhill FC playing against teams such as Norwich City, Ipswich Town and Luton Town, and they defeated Wycombe on sudden death penalties in the final to go on to represent Colchester United and Essex in the regional finals.
They will now play in the Regional Final at Northampton Town on Monday 25th February against schools representing Bristol Rovers, Gillingham and Reading.
There's a big prize at stake, with the winning school playing at Wembley against the winner of the North of England Regional finals.
“I believe part of the success of girl’s football at Thurstable School is due to the weekly after school football sessions, just for girls, that Colchester United deliver as part of the Premier League funding.
"We also have several players who have successfully progressed into our Girls Development Centres through the program and are continuing to develop in an elite footballing environment,” Carla Dickinson, Head of Women’s Football at Colchester United said.
"Last year they managed to get to this stage only to be knocked out in the final on penalties so they are hoping to go one better this year."
