U's Squad Heads North

Training camp awaits in Chester

10 July 2019

The Colchester United first team squad travel to the North West on Wednesday, to continue the hard work ahead of the 2019/20 campaign

After the first couple of weeks working at Florence Park, and victories in the opening two friendlies, the U's head to the North Wales border and the excellent venue at Carden Park.

The trip includes a game at Cefn Druids on Saturday lunchtime, before the squad head home to attend the club's annual Open Day on Sunday.

It's a familiar trip for the U's, with John McGreal praising the facilities when he spoke directly after the game at Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday night.

"The Chairman has been great again, letting us take the players away there again this year - it's the third or fourth time we've been up there since I came in, and you can't fault the place.

"They've got a great pitch for us to get our work done on, and the gym facilities are fantastic for the body work the lads all still need to do. We use the pool there as well for sessions so all our needs are met."

It isn't just because of decent training facilities that training camps are arranged, with the U's Head Coach continuing:

"It's not a brand new squad but there are a good few new faces and the trip's ideal for them to get to know everyone.

"All the lads will be in each other's pockets twenty four hours a day and there's no better way to get to know people's traits and habits than to spend lots of time with them."

Saturday sees the U's take on Cefn Druids in North Wales, and McGreal is expecting a tough test.

"They play in the Welsh Premier League so it won't be easy for us, and we'll have to work extremely hard to get positive performances.

"It might only be a pre-season fixture, but we will need positive performances to get a positive result, and winning is a habit you want to get into even if there aren't any points at stake."

For any fans looking to take in the game, it kicks off at 1pm on Saturday, with admission prices as follows.
Adults: £5
Concessions: £3
Kids: £1
