Peterborough United come out on top in the second game of the evening

25 August 2020

A brace from Ricky-Jade Jones sealed the win for the visitors against a young U's side.

Colchester United have been beaten 2-0 in their final home pre season friendly game, against Peterborough United.

Two first half goals from Jones sealed the win for the travelling side, with the young Colchester United squad working hard throughout the ninety minutes.

STARTING XI: George, Sowunmi, Senior, Kensdale, Fernandes, Clampin, Akolbire, Hasanally, Marshall-Miranda, McLeod, Hutchinson.

Both Colchester United and Peterborough United lined up with a younger starting eleven for the second game of the evening, but the visitors again looked to get ahead early.

Omar Sowunmi leapt highest in the box to get his head to a dangerous cross that was whipped in from the right hand side in the opening ten minutes.

Shamal George got his first touch of the ball after sixteen minutes played, and it was a fine save to keep the scores goalless. Niall Mason burst forwards and found himself with just the 'keeper to beat, and shot low towards the bottom corner, but George was equal to it and produced a fine save.

Ricky-Jade Jones did opened the scoring ten minutes later when he precisely found the bottom corner of the net after weaving his way into the penalty area.

Jones doubled his tally four minutes later when he again tucked the ball into the back of the net. He sprung the offside trap and coolly slotted the ball under the onrushing George to make it 2-0 to Peterborough.

The Posh could have been further ahead before the break when the ball fell kindly to Tasdermir. After Jones' miscued shot landed at Tasdermir's feed, he could only blaze the shot over the bar from inside the area with the goal gaping.

The U's pushed to get more into the game as the half went on, with McLeod's audacious effort curling over the bar before Andre Hasanally saw his driven effort blocked.

The teams came out for the second half with the U's looking to hit back quickly.

Michael Fernandes was keen to show his pace and flew down the right wing before getting a shot away, that was subsequently blocked.

Hasanally was then unlucky to see his shot blocked in the penalty area. Fernandes picked him out, but the visiting defenders were quick to swarm on the Colchester United forward and able to clear the ball.

The young U's midfielder then turned provider for Hutchinson. Hasanally spotted the front man in space in the area, but Jake was unable to make clean contact with the ball in front of goal as the ball ran out for Peterborough to clear.

Shamal George then showed what he can do again by pulling off another brilliant save. Tasdermir was clean through on goal with only the 'keeper to beat but George was out quickly to block and collect the ball.

The U's kept pressing until the final whistle, with a stream of late pressure, but unable to break through.
