Young U's Through To Second Round

4-1 victory at Stevenage puts the U's in the next round of the FA Youth Cup

4 November 2020

Liam Bailey's side progress to the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a 4-1 win at Stevenage thanks to Harvey Sayer and Samson Tovide both two.

After going behind early in the game, Harvey Sayer (pictured above in first team action) and Samson Tovide both found the net twice to ensure it was Colchester United who progressed to the second round.

Yasin Arai was on target after just eight minutes for the hosts, but it took just two minutes for the U's to get back on level terms with Harvey Sayer finding the opening.

Stevenage had the better of the first half with Lynn, Williams and Granville controlling much of the ball in the middle of the park.

But the U's weren't without their chances. Samson Tovide tested Aitken in the home goal with the hosts able to clear their lines, before Tom Stagg was tackled by Dreyer as he raced away towards the target.

Liam Bailey's side needed just two minutes after the half-time break to get their noses in front, as Samson Tovide got his first of the game.

And he worked hard to get his second of the match, just six minutes later as the U's powered into a 3-1 lead with fifty-three minutes on the clock.

The hosts looked to change things up with their three substitutes coming on over the following twenty minutes, but found themselves with a massive uphill challenge with ten minutes to go when Alex Aitken was sent off.

Colchester United took full advantage of their ten-man opposition with Harvey Sayer putting the game beyond all doubt from the resulting free kick, making it 4-1 at the Lamex Stadium.

Colchester United U18 starting XI: Collins, Tchamadeu, Akolbire, Lowe, Fouche, Terry, Sayer, Marshall Miranda, Stagg, Tovide, Thomas.

Subs: Parish, Redgrave, Asare-Williams, Kane, Aman, Marcel-Dilaver, Johnson.

The U's will now travel to face Dorking Wanderers U18s in the second round, after they overcame Dover Athletic in their first round tie.

We will provide an update on the second round details when we have them.
