Steve Ball's side travel to One Call Stadium for Friday night clash

18 November 2020

The U's are looking to make it a third consecutive league win when they travel to face a resurgent Mansfield Town on Friday night at 7pm.

Manager - Nigel Clough

Top Scorer(s) - Harry Charsley, George Lapslie (3)

Last Result - Forest Green Rovers 1-2 Mansfield Town 14/11/2020

After appointing Nigel Clough on the 6th November, Mansfield have won all three games they have played, including a first league win of the season against promotion hopefuls Forest Green Rovers last weekend.

The arrival of the former Burton Albion and Derby County manager has brought an air of confidence back to the club, much needed after the club's disappointing performance last season when they finished twenty-first, and their sluggish start to this campaign.

Speaking after overseeing the club's first league win of the season, Clough was full of praise for his players: "It was an absolutely momentous effort from the players today to see that through.

"Overall, with the three points and the effort that’s gone in today, it’s absolutely brilliant. That’s great for confidence and belief. I think the players will need some recovery as an awful lot of effort has gone in over the last two or three weeks.

"They need to recover ahead of Friday night now, but I think we go into it with a bit more confidence than we had at the start of the week.”

Mansfield's first win of any kind this season came a day after Clough's appointment when the Stags travelled to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland in the FA Cup First Round.

Despit Clough not being in the technical area, his side came out on top with a 1-0 win thanks to George Lapslie's header in the second half.

Four days later, Mansfield had their second win - a 2-1 victory away at Scunthorpe United in the Papa John's Trophy. First half goals from Ryan Sweeney and Jamie Reid was enough to take the win despite a late Scunthorpe goal.

And last weekend, Friday night's opponents secured their first league win when they defeated then third placed Forest Green Rovers, again 2-1 this time with goals from George Lapslie and Harry Charsley.

The game against Colchester United will be the first at the One Call Stadium for Nigel Clough in his management for Mansfield, and he will be hoping to continue the good form he has started while being at the club.
