Steve Ball's side looking to get better of Southend in first Essex derby

10 November 2020

Colchester United will be looking to get one over on their Essex neighbours later when they take on Southend United in the final game of the Papa John's Trophy.

The U's will want to put the disappointment of last weekend behind them as they prepare for the first Essex derby of the season, and the first since 2018, when Southend come to the JCS.

Both sides head into the game after defeat on penalties at the weekend, and will be looking for a confidence boost.

Both Colchester and Southend can progress no further in the Papa John's trophy, having both been defeated by Portsmouth and West Ham U21 in their opening two games, but a win would still be vitally important for either club.

"Saturday was really poor, and I don't think we ever really got going in the game. There was some real positivity after Tuesday night but we just didn't start." - Steve Ball

"It was nowhere near good enough. We've had to go back to the drawing board a little bit to work out what happened and move on from it."

Mark Molesley's Southend United side will travel to north Essex without a win this season, looking to get their first against Steve Ball's team.

With the two clubs now in the same league, it is the first of three Essex derby matches that will be played this season.
