Colchester United 1-0 Forest Green Rovers

U's bounce back to get second win of the season

20 October 2020

Colchester United bounced back from their defeat against Carlisle with a hard-fought one-goal win against unbeaten Forest Green Rovers.

The U's made two changes from their last match at Carlisle, with Luke Gambin and Miles Welch-Hayes coming into the starting eleven, replacing Luke Norris and Miquel Scarlett were on the bench for Colchester United.

Steve Ball's side wasted no time in putting their last result behind them when Noah Chilvers headed his side in front after just seventy-three seconds of play at the JobServe Community Stadium.

A chipped cross from Welch-Hayes found the U's midfielder unmarked at the back post with an easy header for Chilvers to get his second goal of the season.

But Forest Green were quick to get back at the home defence and were unlucky not to draw level ten minutes later.

A header from Odin Bailey had the better of Gerken who remained rooted to the floor, with the bar coming to the U's rescue before Eastman could hook the ball away to safety.

For much of the first half, the play between the two sides was cagey without either team able to assert their dominance in the game.

The visitors pushed to get an eqauliser but the Colchester United back four were holding strong with Tommy Smith controlling the line.

The visitors were sent out on a mission by boss Mark Cooper to get themselves back on level terms.

And their best chance of the game came in the second period, through Jamille Matt.

He was picked out in the area and jumped highest against Smith and Eastman with only Gerken to beat. But his header was straight at the U's keeper, before rebounding out to safety.

Rovers piled the pressure on the U's in the six added minutes, with Jake Young fizzing a shot just beyond the far post.

Crosses were being put into the U's box with the visitors adding extra bodies forwards with time running out, even sending up Luke McGee for a last minute corner.

But the U's held on despite the pressure and two late shouts from the Forest Green players and bench for penalties, ensuring they won their second league game of the season.

The result pushes the U's back in to the top half of the table on ten points.
