Eastman and Brown seal United's first win of the season.

19 September 2020

Colchester United bagged their first win of the season at home to Bolton Wanderers as Tom Eastman and Jevani Brown get on target for the U's.

United lined up with one change from the previous week's draw against Bradford City, with Courtney Senior coming in for captain Harry Pell.

Colchester United Starting XI: Gerken, Welch-Hayes, Bramall, Smith, Senior (Cowan-Hall 76'), Brown, Chilvers, Eastman, Poku (Harriott 67'), Stevenson, Gambin (McLeod 83').

Subs: George, Sowunmi, Harriott, Cowan-Hall, Scarlett, McLeod, Tovide.

Scorers: Eastman 43', Brown 71'.

Bolton Starting XI: Crellin, Jones, Gordon, Almedia-Santos, Delfouneso (Mascoll 81'), Comley, Doyle, Crawford, Hickman (Lockett 76'), White, Baptiste.

Subs: Alexander, Taft, Mascoll, Darcy, Tutte, Brockbank, Lockett.

United came out of the blocks looking for an early goal, with Chilvers taking aim after just two minutes.

Eastman was unlucky on two counts not to open the scoring after seven minutes. Shooting across goal from the far post, the ball flashed just wide of Crellin's goal with the U's attackers just behind the ball.

Noah Chilvers had another shot on goal a minute later, but lifted the ball just over the bar. He was unable to keep his shot from just outside the area down as it flew into the empty stand behind.

The following ten minutes belonged to Bolton, with the visitors pressing. Gethin Jones bent a shot just around the base of the post before Delfouneso couldn't get his effort on target.

Bolton did find the back of the net with Eoin Doyle, as the Irishman lofted the ball over Gerken, but the flag was raised on the near side.

The Trotters went closer still when they hit the post through Crawford.

But United were also looking to get ahead in an end to end game, with Poku's low driven shot grasped by Crellin at the second attempt.

The home side did get their noses in front just before the break with Tom Eastman's header. Jevani Brown flicked on the ball at the near post from Bramall's corner, with Eastman powering the ball home at the back stick, giving the U's a slender advantage at the break.

Bolton came out in the second half really pressing for an eqaulising goal and though they had it when Baptiste had the ball in the back of the net. Fortunately for United, he was offside so the goal didn't count.

Goalscorer Eastman was on his guard at the back as he blocked Doyle from close range before Delfouneso nearly curled in from a tight angle. The two Toms at the back for the U's were working hard, with Smith blocking from Jones and Eastman clearing set pieces.

But when Bolton found a way through the defensive pairing, they could not get past Gerken. The U's 'keeper got down low to pounce on a driven Doyle shot that was arrowing into the bottom corner.

All of the defensive work had paid off for the U's when they added a second of the game. This time it was Jevani Brown who dinked the ball over the onrushing Crellin to score his first league goal of the season.

And Brown was continuing to put the work in up front, as he almost set up Senior for a third. His low cross was stopped on the line by Crellin. The Bolton 'keeper could do nothing when Brown raced free once again. The U's forward again tried to loft the ball over him, but was this time denied by the bar for what would have been a spectacular second.

With the game in hand, Sammie McLeod came on for his debut as he relpaced Luke Gambin in midfield. The twenty-year old didn't look out of place as he played his first minutes of action for the first team.

The 2-0 win for Colchester United means they now have four points from two games and are yet to concede in the league.

Sitting sixth in Sky Bet League Two, United make the long trip to Barrow next weekend, who were beaten 2-1 on their travels at Newport this afternoon.
