Duo Head Out On Loan

Weaire and Sims to gain competitive experience

18 September 2020

Two of Colchester United's young players have gone out on loan until January.

Matt Weaire has linked up with the Southern League Premier Central side Leiston ahead of their league opener on Saturday.

And Ollie Sims has joined Farnborough, who play at the same level, but in the South Division of the Southern League.

Leiston begin the campaign at home and Weaire is expected to be involved in the squad for the game against Rushall Olympic.

Sims will be at his new side's home venue as well tomorrow, as Farnborough host Swindon Supermarine on their opening league game of the season.

Both have been regular starters for the U23s in their time at the U's, and it is thought playing competitive men's football instead of staying with the U23s group would be more beneficial.

U's Director of Football Tony Humes explained: "We've had it here with a number of players, and we've got to that point with Matt and Ollie."

"U23s football won't properly test and push them anymore and they need to make the step into an environment where players and teams are fighting for points in a competitive league.

"They'll be with their respective clubs until the New Year, and the hope is always that the moves will be positive and beneficial for all three parties involved - us, Leiston and of course the lads themselves."
