First Round Carabao Cup tie at Championship side for U's

9 August 2021

Following the season opening goalless draw at Carlisle United on Saturday afternoon, the U's have another away match to look forward to, getting the Carabao Cup campaign underway at Birmingham City's St Andrew's Stadium.

For the second season in a row, Colchester United will face off against a Championship side in the First Round of the Carabao Cup, with Birmingham City the opposition for Hayden Mullins' side on Tuesday evening. Last season's cup run was ended at the first hurdle when the U's were defeated on the road at Reading in the opening game of the 2020/21 season.

And it will be a shorter trip for both players and fans alike on Tuesday evening that the season opener on Saturday afternoon, when the U's took a point from the game on the road at Carlisle United.

A stunning goalkeeping display from Shamal George ensured a clean sheet in the first game of the season, as well as a point to bring back to North Essex.

The Opposition - Birmingham City

It has been fourteen years since the two teams last played, and fifteen years since the U's made an appearance at St Andrew's. On their last visit to the Midlands, the U's played their first ever game in the Championship, losing 2-1 with Richard Garcia on target for the away side.

With former Birmingham City player Lee Bowyer in charge, the hosts got their campaign off to a good start on Saturday evening with a 1-0 win on the road at Sheffield United.

Maxime Colin was on target in the opening twenty minutes for Bowyer's side who had to dig in and hold on in the final stages of the game to deny the recently relegated Premier League side any opportunity to take something from the game.

The U's will have a tough job on their hands if they are to overturn the Championship side, although they have shown they are capabale of cup upsets in the past, making it all the way to the Quarter-Finals in the 2019/20 competition.
