U's at Carlisle for opening League Two fixture

5 August 2021

Hayden Mullins and his new look Colchester United side will make their first competitive outing of the 2021/22 season on Saturday afternoon, making the long journey to Carlisle United.

After three long months of waiting, the U's will return to the football pitch for a competitive game on Saturday afternoon, making the journey up to Brunton Park for the first game of the season.

Ironically, Brunton Park was the venue for the U's last game with a full capacity and away supporters in the ground, back in March 2020. It was a good day for Colchester United then, with Kwame Poku's brace sandwiching Luke Norris' header in a 3-0 win in Cumbria. Another performance and result like that would kick the season off nicely.

With Hayden Mullins now First Team Coach, and Alex Dyer as his Assistant Coach, it will be the first outing for the U's new management duo, along with the possibility of the seven summer signings making an appearance for the Essex side.

The Opposition - Carlisle United

Hayden Mullins and his side will face off against Chris Beech's Carlisle United for the first game, getting one of the longest trips of the season done and out of the way.

The Cumbrian side had ambitions last season of making into the top seven, but a string of games being called off due to Covid within the squad meant that they were playing catch up for the last third of the season.

Bringing in five players, Carlisle will feel they have a good shot at the making it into the play-offs this season. With the additions of Zach Clough and Tristan Abrahams the Brunton Park side will have a formidable strike force, backed up by the other new additions in Corey Whelan and Manasse Mampala.
