Cobblers in North Essex for first home game of the season

13 August 2021

Colchester United will welcome Northampton Town to the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the first competitive home game of the season.

Hayden Mullins and his Colchester United team will return home to the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon, to take on Northampton Town in the first home league game of the season.

Following two games on the road, a goalless draw at Carlisle, followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat at Championship Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup, the U's will play the first of two upcoming home games on Saturday afternoon.

The U's put in a valiant display on Tuesday evening against Lee Bowyer's Birmingham City side, but ultimately fell short of the mark being defeated by a deflected second half goal, despite having perhaps the better chances of the game.

The Opposition - Northampton Town

Jon Brady's new-look Northampton side boast a 100% record after two games of the season. A 1-0 win over Port Vale in Sky Bet League Two got them off to a good start last weekend, with a 2-1 away victory against Championship side Coventry City to add to that on Wednesday evening.

The Cobblers with their win last week sit seventh in Sky Bet League Two, although it is too early in the season to be looking at the table. The opening day win will give them confidence going in the game with the U's this weekend, although the home side will be buoyed by the returning home crowd and two good performances so far this campaign.

A face that may be recognised within the Northampton squad is former U's forward Nicke Kabamba, who spent time on loan at the JobServe Community Stadium in the 2017/18 season. But the main danger man for the Cobblers is the man who found the winner for them against Port Vale, Benny Ashley-Seal.

Signing from Wolves at the start of the 2020/21 season, the pacy attacker joined on a permanent deal after loan spells in Portugal and with Accrington Stanley, netting his first league goal for the club last weekend.
