U's 'keeper delighted with strong personal start to the season

19 August 2021

Colchester United goalkeeper Shamal George says he is happy with the opportunity he has been given at the start of the 2021/22 season, and is looking to keep the shirt.

After joining Colchester United at the start of last season, it was always going to be difficult for U's 'keeper Shamal George to break into the starting eleven with Dean Gerken also at the club.

But after Dean started to struggle with injury niggles towards the back end of the 2020/21 campaign, George was able to assume his place in the line up, and has since gone from strength to strength in the team.

"I was always ready to start the season. I finished the season strong, so wanted to start this season strong as well, so very happy I've got the shirt and feel like I've done well.

"There's always a union with the 'keepers, we all get on and push eachother. I was ready to come back in this season and push for the number one spot, but I'm happy I've started the season, and hopefully I can keep it and push on.

"My aim is to get as many clean sheets as I can this year and we can aim for play-offs or even promotion. With the team that we have got, there is no end to it. You can see the quality we have got now, we have Championship players in the team. It's really good to be around them this season.

"We haven't had the best start, but we do have points on the board. It can only go forward now. We haven't conceded many, we can always do better though. There's always areas we can improve on and that's what we are doing every day in training."
