U23s Defeated At Coventry City

Young U's taste defeat for the first time this season

24 August 2021

Colchester United's U23 side have been beaten for the first time this season, falling to a 2-0 defeat at Coventry City.

The hosts were quick out of the blocks in creating chances in front of Ted Collins' goal, but were unable to take any that fell their way, with Rus and Godden both seeing efforts saved by the U's 'keeper before Burroughs put his header wide.

At the other end, the U's were unlucky not to take the lead through Jake Hutchinson in the twentieth minute, but the front-man pulled his effort wide of the target.

Five minutes later, Dave Huzzey's side were made to pay for their miss, when Jordan Shipley put the Sky Blues ahead. The ball wasn't cleared from Rowe's initial attempt, with Shipley able to slot home beyond Collins.

Just before the break, the hosts would have considered themselves unlucky not to be taking a two-goal advantage, when Howley's effort struck the woodwork following a deflection.

But Coventry City wouldn't have to wait long after the break to add to their slender advantage. Just three minutes after the restart, Burroughs doubled the lead. Shipley turned provider for the second, with Burroughs smashing home from close range.

Jake Hutchinson had another chance to get one back for the U's, with his effort on seventy-three minutes. The U's forward wasn't quite able to hit the target though, once again pulling his shot wide of the post.

Three minutes later, Hutchinson would see his final effort saved by Wilson. From six yards out, the Sky Blues' 'keeper pulled off a good save before his defenders were able to clear the ball away from danger.

The full time whistle blew with the hosts running out 2-0 winners against the young U's. Colchester United's first defeat of the season sees them remain on three points, but they slip to fourth in the table, behind Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town.

Next up for Dave Huzzey's side is the first game of the season at the JobServe Community Stadium. Sheffield Wednesday are the visitors next week to north Essex, on Tuesday evening at 7pm.

Colchester United U23 starting XI: Collins, Tchamadeu, Kazeem, Cornish, Beadle, Freitas-Gouveia, Marshall Miranda, Hutchinson, Thomas, Hasanally, Cracknell.

Subs: Johnson, Trialist, Lowe, Akolbire.
