Colchester United's U23s have progressed in the Essex Senior Cup

Dave Huzzey's young U23s side beat Saffron Walden Town 6-1 in the Third Round on Tuesday night.

A first half opener from Harvey Sayer was cancelled out after half an hour, and the sides went in at at half time level at 1-1.

Sayer completed his hat-trick after the break, with further goals coming from Thomas, Tovide and Bennett.

Four of the U's starters were in the side that beat Arsenal U18s on Friday, looking for further cup success agaisnt the Essex Senior League side.

The young U's got off to a good start, and could have been ahead as early as the second minute.

Al-Amin Kazeem made ground down the left to cross, but Donell Thomas couldn't beat the keeper from six yards.

At the other end, Ted Collins had to tip a deflected shot over the bar, but it was comfortable for the U's keeper.

The woodwork saved the visitors on fourteen minutes, as Samson Tovide's header rebounded off the bar and the scramble that ensued resulted in the ball being cleared for a corner.

On twenty, the U's deservedly took the lead, as Sayer found space in the middle of the pitch and struck a shot from distance into the bottom corner.

Further chances came and went for Marley Marshall Miranda and Chay Cooper as the U's continued to dominate.

Five muinutes before half time, the visitors had a lifeline, as Cooper was adjudged to have fouled his man just inside the U's box.

Piggott stepped up to take the spot kick, and calmy sent Collins the wrong way to level things up.

The youngsters then got sucked into Saffron Walden's physical approach to the game, but the scores remained level going into the break.

The second half saw the U's moving the ball around at a quicker pace that the visitors struggled to deal with, and it only took them six minutes to regain the lead.

Tovide had already had a shot saved when he set up Thomas, who took a tuoch to steady himself before slotting his shot under teh keeper to make it 2-1.

Two became three on seventy three minutes, with Thomas and Cooper combining on the right to set up Sayer to score with his angled drive.

With Saffron Walden tiring, the U's were creating at will at this stage.

Sayer completed his hat-trick when he nutmegged the keeper after a great throughball from Marshall Miranda got him in behind the defence on seventy five minutes.

Tovide got his reward for a tough night's work against two strong centre halves, scoring the U's third goal in the space of four minutes to make it 5-1.

Cooper then had a shot saved, and substitute Kaan Bennett volleyed wide as the U's finished the game strongly.

Bennett did score on eighty six minutes, combining with fellow sub Kai Redgrave to sweep his shot just inside the far post.

It was a comfortable win in the end for the U's, making it into the Fourth Round of the competition.
