Gambin Heads Out On Loan

Newport switch for Luke

20 January 2021

Luke Gambin has joined Newport County on loan.

The Maltese international travelled to South Wales on Tuesday and the loan deal was completed on Wednesday morning, keeping Gambin at the Exiles for the remainder of the season.

Since signing for the U's in the summer of 2019, the twenty seven year old has made fifty appearances, scoring twice.

He will never be forgotten by the U's fans, with one of those goals coming in the Carabao Cup win at Crawley Town that secured a trip to Old Trafford to face Man Utd.

The midfielder has found it tough to gain a starting place in Steve Ball's side this season though and will be hoping for more regular first team football at Newport in the next four months.

Speaking to the official website about the deal, Ball said: "I have been in regular conversation with Gambs and it's understandable that he has been frustrated with his lack of game time recently."

"I've said publicly that we would always look at potential loans for players that aren't in the squad, and this is one that suits every party.

"Hopefully, he gets that game time at Newport and we wish him all the best there."

It is expected that Gambin will go straight into the Welsh side's squad for their League Two game at Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
