Morecambe 3-0 Colchester United

Defeat at the Mazuma Stadium for Colchester United

23 January 2021

Colchester United come away from the Mazuma Stadium with no points to show for their efforts after a 3-0 loss at Morecambe.

A first half goal from Adam Phillips after the U's had the better of the play in the first forty-five minutes set the Shrimps on their way to another three points, with additional goals from Diagouraga and O'Sullivan in the second half. The U's were reduced to ten men midway through the second half, with Captain Harry Pell being sent off, before the third Morecambe goal.

Steve Ball named an unchanged starting eleven from last weekend's game at home to Cambridge United.

There were changes on the bench though, as Miles Welch-Hayes was recalled in place of Junior Tchamadeu, while the latest recruit, Aramide Oteh was on the bench, with Josh Bohui left out.

The game started slowly, with little early chances for either side as the players loooked to grow into the contest.

Cohen Bramall's header was the only effort on target in the opening ten minutes, with his looping header easily collected by the debutant in the Shrimps' goal, Adresson.

Dean Gerken was tested after eleven minutes, but was eqaul to the effort. Adam Phillips curled a free kick towards the far post, but the U's 'keeper swiflty got across to punch the ball away.

The U's pressed forwards more as time went on in the first half and looked dangerous going forwards. Cohen Bramall's cross looked like it would be causing problems in the home penalty area but there was no U's player attacking to make contact.

Steve Ball's side then looked to implement a training ground routine for a corner and it was close to coming off. Bramall, Brown and Pell all combined with the Captain's eventual shot blocked away.

Colchester United went closest of anyone so far with just over twenty-five minutes played as Callum Harriott's strike struck the woodwork. Jevani Brown's neat through ball found the winger with his swerving effort smashing the inside of the post before being cleared.

The U's struck the woodwork once again in the first half, this time with Smith. He attacked the ball from a corner, heading it onto the far post with Andresson beaten, but was unable to score the follow-up.

Andresson was called into action one last time in the first half, denying a long-rang, low drive from Poku with a strong right hand, making a vital save before his side could take the lead in first-half injury time.

From a long clearance, Adam Phillips controlled the ball well, and rounded Dean Gerken before coolly slotting into the empty goal just moments before the whistle blew for half-time.

A fast start in the second half looked to give Steve Ball's side hope for a comeback, but the challenge was made doubly hard just ten minutes into the second period.

Coming on as a half-time substitute, Toumani Diagouraga drifted free in the centre of the area and latched onto a cross from Mendes Gomes, tapping into the net and doubling the lead for the Shrimps.

If the task was difficult then, it became an almost impossible challenge five minutes later when Harry Pell was dismissed, reducing the U's to ten men with almost half an hour to play.

The hosts added a third with ten minutes to go when O'Sullivan snuck in at the back post to convert a cross beyond Gerken.

With no more goals, it finished 3-0 to the hosts who move into the top seven with the three points.

Colchester United slip to fifteenth ahead of their next game, a trip to Stevenage on Tuesday night.
