League One side take on U's on Saturday afternoon

23 July 2021

Colchester United will host Gillingham on Saturday afternoon in the second home pre-season friendly.

Hayden Mullins' side put in a good showing against a solid Spurs side on Wednesday evening, despite losing the game 3-0. But the next match for the U's should be more even between the two teams, with League One Gillingham making the trip to the JobServe Community Stadium.

Steve Evans' visiting side have a bit of catching up to do with their pre-season schedule, having not played a game yet due to a COVID outbreak within the squad a couple of weeks ago.

Nevertheless they will be a formidable opponent for Hayden Mullins' side who will want to go toe-to-toe with a League One competitor in the second home pre-season friendly.

In Sky Bet League One last season, Evans' men finished in tenth position, one behind Tuesday's JobServe Community Stadium visitors, Ipswich Town.

Boosted by the goals of Vadaine Oliver, who bagged twenty for the season in all competitions last season, Gillingham were keeping the pressure on the top six although they fell seven points short come the end of the campaign.

They will be hoping that with a couple of additions to the squad that perhaps they could move higher than the top ten finish and into the top six, in what would be a real achievement for the Kent side.

Colchester United will face off against the Gills later in the season, when Evans' side visit the JobServe Community Stadium in the Papa John's Trophy, but Saturday afternoon's friendly will be a good test for the U's heading into the Sky Bet League Two campaign.
