Paul Cook's new-look Tractor Boys in north Essex for final home pre-season friendly

26 July 2021

Hayden Mullins and Alex Dyer will be preparing their squad to play at the JobServe Community Stadium for the final time in pre-season.

Following the U's defeat to League One Gillingham on Saturday afternoon, Mullins' side will once again be up against third tier opposition for their next friendly, welcoming a new-look Ipswich Town to the JobServe Community Stadium.

It has been well documented that a number of former Ipswich players have made the crossing into North Essex to join Colchester United following a summer clear out at Portman Road, with the club under new management and ownership heading into the 2021/22 season.

In total, four players have signed for Colchester United from Ipswich Town, with Luke Chambers, Cole Skuse, Alan Judge and Freddie Sears all lining up in Col U blue, with the Ipswich connection strong throughout the U's side.

Paul Cook has been busy over the summer at Portman Road, making nine signings in total, including the the loan move of former Colchester United forward Macauley Bonne on a year-long loan deal from QPR.

Other notable arrivals for Suffolk side are:
 - Vaclav Hladky from Salford City, the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in League Two last season.
 - Joe Pigott from AFC Wimbledon, a striker with twenty-two goals for the struggling League One side in the 2020/21 campaign.
 - Rakeem Harper from West Brom, a tricky winger who was highly rated at the Hawthorns, with Premier League and England youth team experience.

Paul Cook joined the Tractor Boys towards the end of last season, following the departure of Paul Lambert, after the latter had failed to gain promotion from League One, despite challenging at the right end of the league at the start of the season.

Cook has experience in getting teams promoted, guiding Chesterfield and Portsmouth to the League Two title in 2013/14 and 2016/17 respectively, and Wigan to the League One title in 2017/18.

With a number of former Town players dotted through the U's squad, they will be wanting to get one over on their former employees on Tuesday evening when the sides meet.
