U's Celebrate World Book Day

Players involved with local schools

4 March 2021

Colchester United Football in the Community are celebrating World Book Day with local children and schools.

Colchester United Football in the Community Sport & Education Staff have this week been celebrating World Book Day 2021 with children learning at home, and children of critical workers and vulnerable children still learning in school.

Staff have been delivering 200 free books to  local Primary Schools this week to distribute to children to celebrate this annual event thanks to The National Literacy Trust.

Colchester United First team Player Courtney Senior has also provided a signed shirt as a competition prize to support the cause and help get children reading and engaging in this year’s event.

Staff have also been delivering online virtual Zoom lessons with children from Langenhoe Community Primary and Lexden Primary in Colchester, delivering spelling quizs and story writing workshops to children.

Colchester United first team players Omar Sowunmi and Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu, along with U23 players Tom Stagg and Sam Cornish are joining in the Zoom calls to take part in the fun!

The Sport & Education Team’s engagement in World Book Day 2021 was supported through the Premier League Primary Stars programme and its partner The National Literacy trust, which supports children in Primary Schools through offering enriched activities and opportunities to pupils and staff.

Kieran Michaels, Primary stars Co-ordinator at Colchester United Football in the Community said: "We love getting involved in events such as World Book Day through our Premier League Primary Stars Programme."

"We’re able to bring children together to celebrate reading, story writing and spelling and demonstrate how much fun it can be! It’s also great to have the support and engagement of our club’s players in sharing the benefits that reading and writing can provide young people."
