Throughout the month of October, Colchester United Football in the Community have been delivering #NoRoomForRacism assemblies through Premier League Primary Stars in local primary schools to support Black History Month.
The aim of these assemblies is to promote equality, diversity and inclusion to young people and allow pupils to gain a better understanding of discrimination and racism in today’s society.
With racism and discrimination unfortunately still evident within our communities, the Premier League Primary Stars #NoRoomForRacism assemblies provided a platform to educate young people and reinforce the message that all forms of discrimination are unacceptable. These events also provided the opportunity to celebrate and share the differences within our communities and bring people together to discuss and understand.
A total of 10 local primary schools hosted an assembly with Colchester United Mascot Eddie the Eagle, spreading this message to 2000+ pupils aged between 4 and 11.
Dave Peck, a teacher from St Thomas More’s Primary School detailed “Pupils discussed and thought about racism and discrimination. They heard from professional footballers about their experiences and applied that to their own lives. Pupils then went on to produce a poster showing why racism is vile and how we can help to erase it from society”.
Luke Drysdale, Premier League Primary Stars Officer at Colchester Football in the Community said “Our Premier League Primary Stars #NoRoomForRacism assemblies have proved really popular within our partner schools. It is great to see that so many schools share the view that discrimination is not acceptable and are passing this message on to the younger generation.”
Everyone at Colchester United Football in the Community would like to thank each school that hosted a Premier League Primary Stars #NoRoomForRacism assembly to support the message of equality, inclusion and diversity!
