Jasper lights up JobServe Community Stadium with late winner

16 October 2021

Sylvester Jasper netted two minutes before the end of the game to give the U's their first home league win of the season, against second-place Harrogate Town.

After an uneventful first half, the U's looked like a fired up team in the second period, with Hayden Mullins' words still ringing in their ears.

Harrogate Town had their own chances to win the game, with Muldoon striking the bar, but it was Sylvester Jasper that fired the winner late on to claim a valuable three points for the U's.

Hayden Mullins named a Colchester United line up with three changes from the side that was defeated 2-0 at Prenton Park by Tranmere Rovers a week ago.

Coming into the starting line up were Noah Chilvers, Junior Tchamadeu and Charlie Daniels, replacing Alan Judge, Cameron Coxe and Ryan Clampin. Judge and Clampin were both missing from the matchday eighteen through injury, but Tommy Smith and Armando Dobra had returned to the squad after coming back from international duty.

At an overcast JobServe Community Stadium, the two teams were cancelling eachother out in the first half an hour of play.

The visitors did have the ball in the back of the net, but it was swiftly ruled out for offside, with Sky Bet League Two top scorer, Luke Armstrong, committing the offence.

Charlie Daniels would have had Mark Oxley worried with a dipping free kick, after Freddie Sears had been brought down by Connor Hall. But the left-back's effort didn't quite dip enough, and flew just over the bar.

It finished goalless after the first forty-five minutes, with it all to play for, for both teams in the second half.

There were a couple of early changes in the second half from both sides to try and affect the game in their favour, with Harrogate Town going closest to opening the scoring twenty minutes into the second period.

Jack Diamond cut inside and got the better of the young U's full back, Junior Tchamadeu, squaring the ball towards Jack Muldoon. The Harrogate forward struck the ball hard against the underside of the woodwork before Shamal George was able to pounce and collect and calm the nerves.

The U's had a good chance of their own with less than twenty minutes to play, when Frank Nouble found space on the edge of the area. Freddie Sears was making headway down the right flank, delivering the ball to Jasper, who in turn found Nouble. But the U's number nine was unable to find the target with the ball flying agonisngly wide of the target.

But the decisive moment in the game came two minutes from the end of the game, when Sylvester Jasper fired the U's to a first home league win of the season.

After Harrogate had failed to put the ball in the back of the net on their attack, Brendan Wiredu made the break forward for the U's. Riding two challenged, the midfielder looked up and played the perfect ball to Jasper who coolly slotted home to give the U's an advantage, and their first home win of the season.

With the win, the U's move up one place to nineteenth in the table, with thirteen points from eleven games, while Harrogate remain in second with twenty-two points.

Next up for the U's is another game at the JobServe Community Stadium when Bristol Rovers make the journey to North Essex. In their game today, they produced some late heroics, scoring a late equaliser at Valley Parade to share the spoils with Bradford City.
