U's 'keeper excited to play in front of home crowd again

17 September 2021

Colchester United goalkeeper Shamal George would have come off the field with a mix of emotions after last weekend's game at Barrow.

The shot-stopper was pivotal for the U's as they claimed a late victory on the road in Cumbria, with Hayden Mullins' side picking up a 3-2 victory.

But the game was marred by racial abuse aimed at George in the first half from supporters behind the goal he was guarding. The U's 'keeper showed exceptional strength to play on throughout the rest of the game, and he is now looking forward to getting back in front of a home crowd on Saturday afternoon.

"We've got both Carlisle and Barrow out of the way now, so we won't have to play them at Christmas when it's minus 5. We've picked up some good results, and it has been good bonding time with the long trips.

"I'm really looking forward to the game on Saturday, we have been putting the work in on the training ground. We've had a really good start and everyone around the place is positive so hopefully we can push on.

"The fans that we have here, I love every single one of them after the support they showed to me and the team on Friday night. I know that they've got my back, and my family were really supportive.

"There's still some people who have a stupid mindset and because of a different colour of skin they can get on to them. I heard the comment, and it upset me, but I had to get my head in the game, and we did come through with the win.

"I didn't want to report it at first, and the reason I said to leave it is because I don't think a lot happens, I don't think there has been a lot of punishment put forward lately. It's never going to go away and that's the upsetting thing."
