U23s defeated by Crewe

Youngsters beaten 4-1 at home

6 April 2022

Colchester United's under 23 side were beaten at home by a strong Crewe team that ran out 4-1 victors in North Essex.

The U's took the lead in the encounter, with Kaan Bennett finding the opening goal, but the visitors had managed to get their noses in front before the break with Trialist and Salisbury on target.

And Trialist added to his tally, completing his hattrick early in the second half with a deft chip over Ted Collins, and converting from the penalty spot to put the game beyond all doubt.

Richard Hall’s side looked dangerous on their early attacks, with Gene Kennedy and Bradley Ihionvien both going close to finding the opening goal.

Kennedy saw his effort from the edge of the penalty area fly just over Jaaskelainen’s bar, with Ihionvien pulling his shot wide of the mark after being released through the middle. Kaan Bennett had also made a good run to create a shooting opportunity, but had just strayed offside as the ball was played.

Bennett went close again just after the ten-minute mark when Ihionvien had sprung the Railwaymen’s offside trap, looking up to find his teammate eight yards from goal. But Bennett dragged his effort wide, keeping the scores level.

The U’s, and Bennett, were rewarded midway through the first half, the forward stooped to guide a header into the top corner. Chay Cooper’s accurate cross found Bennett at the far post who had lost his marker, allowing him to find the back of the net, giving Colchester United the lead.

Crewe came fighting back though, and got themselves back on level terms in the game ten minutes before the break. Griffiths played a lofted ball down the channel for Salisbury to chase, and after beating his man, he delivered the cross for Trialist to head back across goal, beyond Collins.

The visitors completed their turnaround just before the break when the U’s had failed to clear a corner. Billington managed to get his foot on the ball, and backheel it into the path of Salisbury who gratefully accepted by smashing an effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 to Crewe at half time.

Ten minutes after the break, the visitors extended their advantage, with Trialist getting another. His run was picked out on the inside-right channel, and had plenty of time to think about what he would do with his effort, cleverly lofting the ball over Collins to make it 3-1.

Colchester United threatened to get back into the game, with Bennett forcing a good low save out of the goalkeeper, after Chay Cooper had brought an error out of the defence. Marley Miranda then went close from the resulting corner, curling his shot just wide of the corner from outside the penalty area.

But the pressure was in vain for the U’s as Crewe got their fourth, with Trialist completing his hattrick. Gene Kennedy felled his man in the eighteen-yard box, with Trialist converting from twelve yards to make it 4-1 with just over ten minutes of the game remaining.

For the final minutes of the game, the home side continued to look for a route back, but were foiled by a strong Crewe back line, with Jaaskelainen pulling off another good couple of saves.

The full time whistle blew with the visitors coming out on top 4-1 at the JobServe Community Stadium.
