Skipper keen to finish season strongly

21 April 2022

Colchester United's Captain, Tommy Smith, has encouraged his players to keep the performance levels up for the final three games.

Tommy Smith captained the side on Easter Monday as the U's claimed three points against Bradford City, and says his teammates are targeting another win on Friday evening.

Colchester United head to Rodney Parade to take on Newport County in the penultimate away game this season, and Smith says his side will be ready to put in another strong performance.

"We found ourselves down the table when Wayne, Joe and Dave came in, and it wasn't a situation we wanted to be in but now we've ticked that box, there is a sense of relief. You're always looking over your shoulder when you're at the wrong end of the table and it's nice to get that done now.

"But the work doesn't stop and we have to finish the season strongly. People are still playing for their places, and we're all still playing for the fans, and we need to get as many points as we can.

"Credit to the gaffer, he's come in and stamped his authority on things, and we've had the turnaround in fortunes. He brings his own authority and you know he's the boss - he's very concise in the points he gets across. It's been really good to see him do well."
