Match Preview | Rochdale (H)

Wayne Brown's side hosting Rochdale at JobServe Community Stadium

1 February 2022

Rochdale will make the long journey back down to the JobServe Community Stadium for the rearranged fixture against the U's.

The game against Rochdale was originally planned to be the first home game of 2022 for Colchester United, before the officials' decision to postpone the game shortly before kick off put paid to that.

But Wayne Brown's new-look side will be back in action at the JobServe Community Stadium on Tuesday evening for the second match in four days, with the Dale making the trip back to North Essex for a 7:45pm KO.

After making nine January signings, the U's will be looking to pull away from the bottom of the table, and a match against a Rochdale side that sit three points above them will be a good opportunity for the home team.

But after Saturday's game, Brown, Dunne and Huzzey will have some selection dilemmas, with Luke Chambers and Shamal George both missing through suspension. The U's will also be without Tommy Smith who is away on international duty with New Zealand.

The Opposition
Sitting just three points above the U's in the table, Robbie Stockdale's side will be hoping to put some real distance between themselves and any relegation fears in Colchester tonight.

Collecting twenty-nine points from twenty-five games, the Dale sit eighteenth in the standings and will be looking for their first win of 2022 after a loss and two goalless draws in their three matches this year.

In fact, tonight's visitors are yet to score, which could partly be down to the departure of top scorer, Jake Beesley, who made a transfer to Championship side, Blackpool just a day after the original fixture against the U's was postponed.

As a replacements for Beesley, Rochdale brought in the services two forwards in the shape of Luke Charman and Tahvon Campbell, both coming from non-league, but with expeirence of playing within the EFL.

Another welcome addition for the Dale during the transfer window was the permanent addition of Corey O'Keeffe from Mansfield Town. The wing-back was the top assist maker through the first half of the campaign for Stockdale's side, with six to his name as well as four goals.

O'Keeffe will be likely to play on the right side, with Rochdale lining up in a 3-4-3 formation, with Max Clark, another January addition, playing on the opposite side at left wing-back.

Last Time We Met

The points were shared on the U's trip to Spotland earlier this season, with both goals coming from Rochdale players. Max Taylor put through his own net in comical style to give the U's the advantage, with Jimmy Keohane grabbing the equaliser after half time.
