U's travel to league leaders on Tuesday evening

11 January 2022

Colchester United will return to Sky Bet League Two action on Tuesday evening, taking on the league leaders, Forest Green Rovers, at the Fully Charged New Lawn.

The U's weren't able to get underway on Saturday afternoon against Rochdale, with the officials calling the game off at short notice.

But Hayden Mullins' side will be hoping they can get something from a tough game against the league leaders, Forest Green Rovers, on Tuesday evening.

With three signings already through the door in the January transfer window, the U's management team were looking to get a fresh start in 2022 with Tom Dallison, Corie Andrews and Cam Coxe all joining.

And the U's will be wanting these additions to make an impact for Tuesday's game against Rovers, looking to pull away from the bottom two in the league standings.

The Opposition
Rovers have been almost flawless in the first half of the 2021/22 league campaign, currently sitting seven points clear of second place Tranmere Rovers with a game in hand.

Collecting forty-eight points from twenty-two matches, Rob Edwards' side will have to suffer a monumental collapse in the second half of the season to avoid automatic promotion, after setting the pace for the fourth tier.

Boasting one of the most potent strike forces in the league with Jamille Matt and Matt Stevens, with fifteen and fourteen goals respectively, Rovers are far and away the highest scorers in the league with forty-five goals so far.

Combining that with the second tightest defence in the division, including Luke McGee's ten clean sheets and you'll Rob Edwards' side well on their way to the third tier.

Jamille Matt is without doubt the key player at the New Lawn, with twenty-three goal contributions so far, but Kane Wilson's tally of nine assists in twenty-four appearances has helped Rovers to their table-topping position.

The twenty-one-year-old West Brom loanee has been influential at right wing-back for the club, with Nicky Cadden providing eleven goal contributions (six goals, five assists) from the other wing-back position.

Last Time We Met

The U's were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in the last meeting between the two clubs. Wayne Brown's side travelled to the New Lawn eleven months ago, but were undone by first half goals from Jamille Matt, and a second-half strike from Udokwa Godwin-Malife.
