U's skipper says improvements are needed quickly

4 January 2022

Colchester United are aiming to make it into the quarter-finals of the Papa John's Trophy at Sutton United this evening.

But improvements are needed if they are to make the last eight of the competition - that's according to the U's Captain, Tommy Smith after a 3-1 defeat at Crawley Town on New Year's day.

A tough day at the office for Tommy and his defensive teammates saw three goals put past them in the defeat to the Red Devils, but they will be looking to put that right in the knockout stages of the Papa John's Trophy this evening.

"We made no excuses after the performance, we weren't good enough from back to front. We had to take a long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror, and we are the ones that need to make it change quickly.

"It shouldn't take two or three goals for us to start playing, we need to be braver when the score is 0-0, but it wasn't to be.

"We need to regroup and bounce back, and luckily the games are coming thick and fast from now on. We need to do better."
