Match Preview | Charlton Athletic (H)

League One side opponents for first home friendly

12 July 2022

Colchester United will take on League One Charlton Athletic for the first home pre-season game on Tuesday evening.

Wayne Brown's side will return to the JobServe Community Stadium for the first home game of pre-season, with League One Charlton Athletic the visitors to North Essex.

The U's have had a positive start to the summer with three arrivals in the form of Emyr Huws, Sam Hornby and Alex Newby, as well as keeping the majority of last season's squad together.

Having a handful of games already under their belts with the trip to the South West and against Tottenham's youngsters on Saturday, the U's preperations are well underway for the first game of the season in a little under three weeks' time.

The Opposition
Former Swindon Town boss, Ben Garner was appointed Head Coach at the Valley ahead of the 2022/23 season, signing a three-year deal.

Missing out on promotion with Swindon in the play-offs, Garner made the switch to the capital after capturing attention with an attractive style of football at the County Ground.

And speaking about his new employers after signing, the forty-two-year-old said: "It feels fantastic to be here. I'm really pleased and can't wait to get going. Charlton is a massive football club, both in terms of tradition and history and just as importantly in terms of potential and scope looking forwards."

Upon his announcement, the Addicks were keen to stress his attacking brand of football, with Garner's side ending up as the highest scorers in the fourth tier. In addition, Swindon Town also had more shots than any other team, as well as holding the host amount of possession on average.

"Attacking football is what I believe in, that is how I think football should be played and I will be looking to implement that from day one, both home and away. There is no differentiation in terms of how we prepare, how we play, we will be consistent and we want to attack."

Last Time We Met

It's been almost six years since we last took on Charlton in a competitive fixture, with the last coming in the Checkatrade Trophy in 2016. The game was all but meaningless, with both sides already unable to qualify - nevertheless, the two played out a 1-1 draw with Ajose and Bonne on the scoresheet, before the U's snatched the extra point on penalties.
