Richard Hall's youngsters claimed victory in a pre-season game against Heybridge Swifts yesterday evening, with Benny Bioletti and Trialist on target.
The U's made a quick start in the game, taking the lead after quarter of an hour, but had a chance to go ahead even before that, with Tovide unable to capitalise from Cooper's early cross.
The opening goal came from Benny Bioletti, the youngster who signed his first pro deal in the summer with the U's, and it was a goal to remember. Collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area, he controlled it well before rifling an effort into the top corner.
And Richard Hall's side could have been further ahead before half time, with Cooper and Tovide both linking up well, but unable to add to the tally.
The U's were pegged back shortly after half time after making three subs, all trialists. Heybridge managed to draw level after sixty-one minutes, equalising from a corner.
But the hosts would only be level for all of six minutes, with one of the half-time changes bagging the second for the U's. Trialist 14 beat two players on his way into the penalty area, before releasing a shot that was parried by the 'keeper for Trialist 17 to convert from close range.
Trialists 14 and 17 looked lively as they tried to make their mark on the game, with 14 beating the 'keeper with a header as the game entered stoppage time. But he had strayed into an offside position to win the ball, and the third goal was disallowed.
Nevertheless, it was a strong performance against good opposition for the U's youngsters, claiming a 2-1 victory.
Next up for the U23s is a trip to Potters Bar on Saturday afternoon, with a 3pm kick off at Parkfield.
