Tommy Preparing For World Cup Qualifying Game

Crunch match preceded by friendlies against Peru and Oman

3 June 2022

Colchester United Skipper Tommy Smith is preparing for an all-important game with New Zealand in just under two weeks' time.

The All Whites take on Costa Rica in the Intercontinental Play Off for a spot at this year's Qatar World Cup, with the U's Captain hoping to help his country to a third appearance at the tournament.

But before they take on the team that finished fourth in their group, behind Canada, Mexico and the United States, Tommy Smith and New Zealand have games against Peru and Oman to warm up for the final.

New Zealand came through their initial qualifying group comfortably, beating Solomon Islands 5-0 in the final, and will be hoping to take that confidence into the next couple of weeks.

Speaking at the time, Tommy said: "It's always an honour and a privilege to be called up to the National Team."

"I'll be doing all I can to ensure it's a successful qualification process for us as a group, as we look to complete our ultimate goal of qualifying for the Qatar World Cup."

Keep an eye across the U's social media channels to see how Tommy gets on throughout the next couple of weeks.
