Huzzey Happy With First Team Role

20 May 2022

Dave Huzzey's role as a first team coach has been made permanent, and he is pleased to continue his involvement with Colchester United's senior squad.

Dave, along with Joe Dunne, was brought in to help Wayne Brown back in January - with the target of getting the U's away from the relegation battle.

Having moved the club seventeen ponits away from the bottom two, the trio have been tasked with taking charge on a permanent basis, and Huzzey is as excited about that proposition as he was about initially moving up to the first team environment from his U23s role.

"The most exciting part for me was working with some of the senior pros who could be role models to the younger players and I think they've taken that on very well."

"The likes of Cole Skuse and Brendan Wiredu have worked with the U23s players quite a bit and the likes of Junior Tchanadeu and Noah Chilvers are reaping the rewards."

Dave had been a coach at the U's Essex rivals Southend United, but moved north of the county back in 2019.

Over the past three years, he has overseen the progression of youngsters from the U's Academy into the first team.

It's the hardest step up that young footballers will make, and Dave admits that there are real differences between the two groups.

He told Col U TV on Tuesday: "One of the biggest diffferences from my perspective betwween the first team and the Academy groups has been the standards that have been set."

"These standards that Wayne, Joe and myself have set, not just for the young players in the squad but for all of them, have been high and will be even higher this coming season.

"I'm excited about doing this pre-season, my first with the first team squad. I've done a few with U23s and U18s squads but the pressure is different.

"We have to create a winning mentality and a winning team going into the new season starting at the end of July."
