U's boss preparing for FA Cup First Round tie

4 November 2022

Colchester United head back to Newport County for the second time in as many weeks on Saturday afternoon.

This time, the U’s head to Rodney Parade for the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup, taking on their fellow League Two opponents.

Matt Bloomfield’s side were beaten 1-0 in South Wales a fortnight ago, and the U’s Head Coach has said his team will be heading back with a point to prove this weekend.

“If you watched our last two home games, I think we played really well, and I think we are moving forward and turning things around. We were disappointed to concede three from set pieces on Tuesday evening, and apart from those I don’t think there was too much in the game, and we scored a good goal at the end.

“They (Newport) will know us really [after playing them a couple of weeks ago], so it’s a level playing field. We’re trying to move forward and we’re working as hard as we possibly can, and we are happy with a little bit of the progress we’ve made, but we certainly know there’s a lot more to come.

“Newport are evolving all the time, and I’ve got massive respect for Graham and Joe, we know the jobs they’ve both done at this level in the past. And we also know them personally as well as professionally and we respect them fully. They’ve got some good players down at Newport, and we’ve watched their game so we’re certainly doing our homework and we’re prepared, ready for the game.”
