Colchester United welcome Southampton U21s to the JobServe Community Stadium for the second group game in the Premier League Cup.

The U’s are coming into this game following a 4-1 defeat away to a very strong Millwall side, it was a game in which Emyr Huws scored on his return from injury, however the first team recently played a game in the Essex Senior Cup, and due to our Papa Johns Trophy game being the next day, most of the U21s took to the field to play out a 1-1 (3-5) win against National League side Maidstone, an encouraging performance from the young U’s ahead of what will be a massive challenge for them tomorrow afternoon.

The U’s have played one game so far in the Premier League Cup, they won 2-1 against Birmingham in a hard fought victory, in the end the U’s deserved to win and the goals came from Samson Uwandu who is in fantastic form at the moment and Kai Redgrave.

The Opponents

Southampton U21s are coming into this game in fine form, the side are on a four game win streak and are currently sitting second in the Premier League 2 Division 2, they’re coming into this game off the back of a 4-0 win in the Premier League Cup against Birmingham. Also in our group is Everton, who Southampton beat 2-1. The U’s and Southampton are the only two unbeaten teams in the group.

Across the Premier League 2 Division 2 the Saints have played nine games, in that time they’ve scored twent-eight times, conceding half of that, they’ve won nine games, drawing one and only losing two, while having a game in hand on seven of the teams below them.

The side also played in the Papa Johns Trophy, and managed to score against two League One sides, Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers, however they didn’t win a match.
