Young U’s suffer first defeat in the Premier League Cup.

26 November 2022

The Colchester United U21s lose 5-0 to Southampton U21s with all goals coming in the second half, following a 42nd minute red card given to Marley Marshall Miranda.

The opening ten minutes were cagey, with neither team having the upper hand, in the ninth minute though, the U’s were the first to have a shot on target with Jayden Fevrier letting fly from the left-hand side, his shot was well saved by Ollie Wright in the Southampton goal, the ‘keeper managed to parry the ball out of danger and Kai Redgrave’s follow up shot was blocked well.

Southampton responded well to the u’s pressure and Sam Bellis had the best chance of the opening fifteen minutes, a ball was played in, and the forward went for the spectacular, an overhead kick on the edge of the six-yard box, Ted Collins got down brilliantly to save the shot and the U’s were able to clear.

Fevrier had another big chance in the 27th minute, the U’s played a lovely passing move after a large amount of possession, but the Winger could find the net, his first shot was saved well again and the second was blocked brilliantly. Four minutes later Fevrier had the ball again, he made a direct run down the left-hand side and played a ball to Chilvers who was on the edge of the box, but once again his shot was blocked.

In the 42nd minute the U’s went down to ten. Marley Marshall Miranda was sent for an early bath after a second bookable offence. The midfielder came through the back of Jack Turner in an attempt to win the ball, making the U’s already difficult task a lot harder.

With the one-man advantage it didn’t take Southampton long to capitalise and break the deadlock, in the 50th minute Amo-Ameyaw was on the counter attack, he was supported well by Otseh-Taiwo who retrieved the ball from the striker, and put it through Collins’ legs to make the score 1-0.

The Saints made it two from the penalty spot after Luke Pearce went shoulder to shoulder with Curran-Nichols and fell over, Jimmy-Jay Morgan scored from the spot in the 66th minute.

The Saints made it three four minutes later after Sam Amo-Ameyaw hit the bar with a chip, he was played through well and the shouts for offside were not listened to by the assistant, the ball rebounded back to the feet of Pearce who took a touch and finished well.

Five minutes later it was four, the Saints were using the extra man well with constant overlapping counter attacks, this time it was Sam Bellis who played a lovely ball into the box for Morgan to get on the end of, he made no mistake with the first-time finish.

Amo-Ameyaw made it five in the 81st minute. It was a similar build up to the fourth as the Saints made use of the extra man on the counterattack and had a spare man to play the ball to, the striker was the spare man in this instance, and he had the time and space to wrong foot Collins and finish into the right hand corner.

The game petered out in the last nine minutes, it was a game which was ruined by a red card near the end of the first half, the U’s struggled having to play over half of the game with ten men. A frustrating afternoon for Dave Huzzey’s side.
