Football College Programme Update

Community Football College Programme season underway along with 2022/23 recruitment

7 November 2022

The 2022/23 season is underway for Year 12 and 13 students on the Thurstable Football College Programme in Tiptree.

Colchester United Football in the Community have created a strong relationship with Thurstable school over recent years which has seen our Football College Programme grow to forty-two students this season with two full time teams competing in the EFL Community & Education Football Alliance.

We have added former Tottenham Hotspur, Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham Town and Hartlepool United player Jack Munns to our Coaching Team to work alongside UEFA A Licensed Head Coach Isaac Berry and other UEFA B licensed coaches in supporting the students on the pitch. The ‘Good’ rated Ofsted education on offer to the students in the classroom provides a positive balance between academic and footballing development and career progression.

Please see an update on the season so far in the EFL Community & Education Football Alliance:

Colchester United A Team

It has been a brilliant start to the season for our A Team in the first term. Winning four games and drawing one whilst also progressing through to the next round of the cup. Across those games scoring twenty-one goals. The team currently sit fourth in the table having player games less that the teams around them. Some stand out performance came early on in the season away to Norwich winning in the ninety-fifth minute of the game. Also going away to a tough Charlton team fighting back from 1-0 down get a point out of the game continuing our unbeaten start. Isaac Berry said “It has been a good start for the group they’ve taken on board information really well both pre and post-game. The only challenge to the group now is to continue this and to continue putting in good performances”.

Colchester United B Team

The B Team have had a real mixed start to the campaign. The group won their opening match in a convincing 5-0 win before going on to defeat in two tough games against Peterborough and AFC Wimbledon. The team however got back on track then with 5-0 win against local rivals Southend. We currently sit in mid table having played the least amount of games in the league scoring fifteen goals in five games. This group are still fighting within the cup and are waiting their last group stage game in the coming week. Jack Munns said “Our league position doesn’t reflect where we are currently at in terms of performances. I believe our performances have been good and if we can continue like this we will develop and grow in the coming weeks”.
