Young U's lose in Wales

25 October 2022

Colchester United U21s lost 4-1 in Wales this afternoon after playing a very strong Cardiff City. with Cardiff's goals coming from Etete, White, Philogene and Tanner. Thomas scored for the U's.

Cardiff City took the lead in the eighth minute through Etete, the ball dropped for him from after the Trialist in goal palmed away a corner, the strike was unorthodox and it looped over everyone and hit the back of the net.

The first half’s tempo slowed down after the first goal went in, with neither team being able to impose themselves in the game. Cardiff looked the more likely to score in the first half but the U’s also had some chances with Ihionvien using his head to blast the ball just over the bar.

Cardiff made it two with six minutes to go before the break, Gavin White finishes off a brilliant move from the Welsh side as the string some nice passes together down the right side and Watters puts in a low cross to the goal scorer to get on the end off, giving the ‘keeper no chance.

The hosts added a third after a loose ball from Akolbire was caught onto by Philogene who ran through and found himself one-on-one with the ‘keeper, the forward made no mistakes and smashed it past the Trialist.

With twenty minutes to go the U’s pulled one back, a ball was played into the box which found a Trialist on the right of the area, the winger put the ball back into the danger area and Donell Thomas came through with a very powerful header from the edge of the six-yard box, leaving the ‘keeper no chance to get anything on it.

Cardiff regained their three goal advantage five minutes later, a great run from helped him get in behind the U’s, there was a hint of offside but nothing was given, Conte pulled his cross back to the edge of the box it was met by Tanner who scored a lovely first time finish past the Trialist.

There were chances at both ends in the second half but Colchester United couldn’t find a way back into the game, and as soon as they scored Cardiff City replied with a fourth, a frustrating afternoon for Dave Huzzey’s side.
